Smaller, more powerful, more reliable and at the same time less expensive—these requirements determine not only today's electronics market. Complex, miniaturised, electronic and optical systems have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Globally regarded as a key technology of the 21st century, microsystems technology has also become indispensable, since microsystems and microsystem components offer far-reaching perspectives and markets for industry and research.

Microsystems technology is one of the six areas of activity in the Berlin-Brandenburg Optics Cluster. With around 40 companies and an excellent research infrastructure, Berlin-Brandenburg is one of the strongest regions in Germany when it comes to microsystems technology. In addition to the traditional application areas of industry, automotive technology, communication and medicine, major new areas of application have opened up in the form of life science, facility management, production technology and energy efficiency.

The main topics of the region are

  • Multifunctional microsystems
  • Sensors and measurement technology
  • MOEMS
  • Reliability and durability
