Light as a measuring instrument—the discovery of the laser also opens up new methods for optical metrology, improved measurement productivity and measurement accuracy. Today, optical measuring methods are widely used, not only in industrial food production and in the pharmaceutical industry, but increasingly also in environmental analysis.

Optical measurement methods play a major role, especially along the industrial value chain, because they meet the industry's growing demand for high-precision, flexible and fast measurement methods for the monitoring of production and manufacturing. Compared to traditional sampling in industrial production, they offer important advantages. Optical measurements can be carried out continuously and automatically and corrections can be made without interrupting production. Measurements based on light of different wavelengths allow statements to be made about the properties of the investigated material as well as the control of production processes and surfaces. For example, mechanical engineering, the semiconductor industry and automotive engineering depend on such optical measurement methods.

The field of optical analytics is one of the six areas of activity in the Optics Cluster and is characterised in particular by its versatility. Berlin-Brandenburg is very well-positioned in many areas of optical metrology, and its areas of focus include:

  • Development of multidimensional spectroscopic methods
  • Image generation and processing
  • Innovative optical analysis methods, e.g. for in-situ process analysis
