Online seminar: MEMS Technologies for Vehicle Environment Detection

OpTecBB online seminar in cooperation with Fraunhofer IPMS.

Speaker:  Jörg Amelung - Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (Monolithically Integrated Actuator and Sensor Systems)

Autonomous vehicles is one of the most prospective future market segments. In this context, sensor systems are essential to detect obstacles, such as other vehicles or pedestrians, in the environment of the vehicle. Such systems have to be safe, robust, compact and low cost to cover mostly the whole market segment. Actual environmental sensors are mostly based on traditional electronic components.
In this webinar the potential of microsystems for the innovation in autonomous vehicles will be demonstrated. One application field is LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), the future technology to measure the distance to an object by illuminating this object with laser light, which serves to precisely digitize the environment and navigate the vehicles safely in this environment. Currently used LiDAR systems are based on mechanical macroscopic mirror systems and are extremely large and price-intensive. Solid-State LiDAR systems (SSL) should lead to considerable cost reductions; based on microsystems they are smaller, cheaper and more robust than purely mechanical LiDARs.
Ultrasound environmental detection is the main technology used to avoid damages in the near surrounding of the vehicles. The novel ultrasound transducers in MEMS technology developed allows the very compact integration of ultrasound detectors especially avoiding side impacts of the vehicle. Additional technologies like RADAR or infrared cameras complete the set of sensors for safe and compact environmental detection for autonomous vehicles. In completion sensor data fusion, including AI based edge computing, is essential to reduce the necessary power consumption. Inside the webinar a complete overview about the necessary combination for autonomous vehicles will be given.
