Photonics Hub Online Seminar: UV fibers for UV spectroscopy: current status

Multimode UV-fibers with high-OH synthetic silica core and F-doped silica cladding have been available for many decades. Before 1990, the spectral UV-range above 250 nm wavelength was commonly used, because the solarization due to UV-absorbing defect centers prevented reliable light transfer in the UVC range below 250 nm; even light from a low-power broadband deuterium-lamp was sufficient to damage these UV-fibers of the 1st generation. In meantime, these UV defects generated by UV-light have been significantly reduced. Therefore, fiber-optic applications in the field of UV spectroscopy, even below 200 nm, are realized, using the improved fibers. In parallel, a DIN standard for measuring these UV defects is available.

In the webinar, the following points will be presented:

  • Short review about the technical improvements
  • DIN-standard about solarization in all-silica fiber
  • Current properties of UV all-silica fibers with synthetic silica-core,
    using broadband cw deuterium-lamp and pulsed Xe-lamp
  • Short overview about UV fiber-optic applications in the field of spectroscopy and process control using deuterium-lamps.
