Berlin recently hosted the latest BaltiQC project meeting – Quantum Communication Link in the Baltic Sea Region at Berlin Adlershof. Project partners, researchers, industry representatives, and new interested stakeholders came together to exchange updates, share insights, and continue building momentum for the next phase of the initiative.
Meeting above the rooftops of Berlin, participants presented the newest developments from their work packages, reflected on lessons learned so far, and explored future strategies together. Alongside engaging technical presentations, there was plenty of space for open discussion, networking, and new connections. The atmosphere was relaxed but full of energy — driven by curiosity, collaboration, and a shared vision for advancing quantum communication across Europe.
About the BaltiQC Project
BaltiQC aims to build a strong network of industry partners — including start-ups, SMEs, and research institutions — to create a demonstrator for a quantum-safe communication link in the Baltic Sea region. The project focuses on using and integrating existing technologies to enable quantum-safe key exchange between communication nodes, rather than developing entirely new solutions from scratch.
The planned demonstrator will connect important hubs across Germany, Poland, and Lithuania, including Berlin, Poznań, Warsaw, Gdańsk, and Vilnius. By combining fibre-based and free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the project aims to create a flexible and resilient communication infrastructure. Free-space segments are particularly important for overcoming geopolitical and geographical challenges, and there is also potential to include secure space-based links in the future.
The demonstrator will serve as a practical platform for testing, evaluation, and shared learning — contributing to the broader vision of a European quantum communication infrastructure.
Funding and Coordination
BaltiQC is currently funded as a ZIM International Network by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The international network is coordinated by Eura AG, supporting collaboration and knowledge exchange between partners across countries and sectors.
The consortium looks forward to continuing the collaboration and to the new insights and results that will emerge as the project progresses.
