Transmitting massive amounts of data over long distances as quickly as possible has been a natural part of our daily and professional lives since the dawn of the Internet age. The technological backbone of today’s Internet is optical communication technology and fiber optics.
The volume of data transmitted continues to grow exponentially, placing increasing demands on communication networks. The importance of optical networks, which transport data quickly, securely, and reliably, will continue to rise, as will the demand for optical and optoelectronic components and subsystems that continually increase transmission capacity while reducing errors and latency.
Within the Optics Cluster Berlin-Brandenburg, Quantum Communication and Sensing is one of ten focus areas. The capital region is exceptionally well positioned in optical communication technology, hosting world-leading companies, internationally recognized research institutes, and highly innovative start-ups.
Topics include:
- Development of high-capacity dynamic communication systems
- Photonic system integration (chip-integrated and hybrid)
- Optical sensing for position and orientation detection, as well as analytics (fiber-optic, free-space, waveguide-based)
The group meets online or at one of the partner companies every first Wednesday of the month. Each meeting features an exciting keynote presentation, discussions on cluster activities, and a “One Info from Everyone for All” session:
