The newly founded Intelligent Biomedical Sensing (IBS) Lab at TU Berlin's BIFOLD / Machine Learning Department develops miniaturized wearable neurotechnology and body-worn sensors for unobtrusive monitoring of the embodied brain in the everyday world. It uses machine learning on multimodal sensor data, together with environmental context information toward intelligent monitoring and individualized comprehensive understanding of physical and mental states and risk factors. We are looking for a student research assistant (m/w/d) in the domain of Machine Learning for Biomedical SignalAnalysis and Modelling I.

Approx. 60% direct work with the research group leader to support with teaching tasks such as organizing courses, and preparatory activities such as helping with presentations, compiling scientific materials; Support with exams and practice materials, etc.II)

Approx. 40% support for scientific work on linear physiological models for brain imaging and physiologically-informed neural networks. Creation of synthetic data sets. Co-development of methods for analyzing optical and electrical body brain imaging data (fNIRS and EEG, ECG, oximetry). Validation of the methods on given data sets.

The position is advertised with 80 hours per month. However, a reduction of the monthly hours is possible.

Your profile:


  • Extensive knowledge in the subject computer science, physics, engineering, applied mathematics or similar
  • Very good knowledge of machine learning methods, especially linear models, blind source separation (ICA, PCA,CCA), etc.
  • competent programming knowledge (especially in Python, also Matlab), experience with ML and linear algebralibraries (NumPy, sklearn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.)
  • Experience with version control tools, e.g. Git;
  • the ability to teach in German and/or in English is required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills,
  • team player and good communicator pronounced
  • analytical and conceptual skillsa high level of initiative, self-motivation and results orientation

It's a Plus:

  • Experience with time-series analysis, linear models, and biomedical signals
  • Experience in scientific work
  • Practical experience in the development and application of ML algorithms and signal processing· Interdisciplinary and cooperative project experience
